Beautiful News

I don’t have a GPS system on my vehicle—I do have Samuel, thankfully, who was blessed with an excellent sense of direction—but when he is not with me, I get lost. Often. And in search of a familiar landmark, I’ve wished many times to have something to point me in the right direction.

It was cold Christmas Eve morning when I awoke and headed up to the “attic.” I planned on grabbing a box and heading back to the warmth of the wood burner to wrap a gift. I picked one that looked to be the perfect size but when I pulled it out, it felt heavier than I expected. I opened it to discover some letters that I had received over the course of a year...20 years ago.

I love letters and rarely throw them out…they bring back memories that would otherwise be long forgotten. But I was surprised that these letters had lasted so long. I knew that several of them were painful and those months had long been replaced by almost two decades of delightful memories.

I opened the box and sat Indian-style on the cold floor and began reading. Over an hour later with tears streaming down my face, I heard the early morning stirrings of my sweet Seth. In that moment I realized that what had brought me so much distress and signified such a difficult time in my life was the “GPS system” that God had used to steer me in a different direction.

My niece, Amy, was the only (unfortunate) one awake for me to share this experience with. Poor child. At 14, there’s just no way to understand what I was trying to communicate…that sometimes in our walk with God, He reveals His plan…and He WAS leading me and He had never let go!

I love these lyrics to Beautiful News by Matt Redman

Oh no, You never let go,
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go,
In every high and every low
O no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me.
You keep on running and you never let go
Lord You never let go of me

I added this song to my playlist today. You have a “story” too, I’m sure. Let’s rejoice today because He never lets go! Go ahead. Turn it up and sing!

Amy, thank you so much for a beautiful post. It was exactly what I needed today. Thanks for sharing.
Amy,
It's been a long time since I saw you and David. You were on D hall and I was on B hall. Now they don't even open up B hall. Anyway, I ran across your blog on Mary Ellens and thought I would say hello. Your boys are so cute! You have a beautiful family. I would love for you to check out my blog. I am a recent joiner but I am enjoying every minute.
It is so wonderful to run across the different one's I have known from HSBC and see that they are still serving the Lord. It is encourageing to me.
God bless you and your family.

Great post. It is amazing how in the midst of hard times it is sometimes difficult to see how God is using it for our good, but later when we look back we see how He was leading us.

I guess Samuel probably knows his way around Atlanta by now. If we can ever get down there for a visit we'll have to "borrow" him for the trip.

Homeschooling Curriculum Help?

Shannon is hosting a backwards edition of what-works-for-me Wednesday , where you can ask for advice/ or suggestions instead of giving them. Yeah! I need some advice. David and I are really praying and considering homeschooling our boys, K4 and grades 2 and 6 —beginning this fall. Can anybody recommend a curriculum, either as a whole or as a subject, that you are crazy about that doesn’t make you crazy? Secondly, if you could give one tip for “survival” what would that be?

February 27 Update

I just called to see if Amy wanted to blog anything today, but at the moment she is talking on the phone to her wonderful friend, Deb Rose. Deb and her husband, Brian, used to live in Louisville several years ago. They were our very best friends. If I were talking to the Roses this evening, I would tell them that Amy is desperately scared. The docs have given her a very stiff dose of antibiotics, but as of this moment, her body temp is climbing once again. Her primary doctor told her he fears that this infection may be fungal in nature. I don’t completely understand all of the implications, except that we are shooting at this infection with our biggest guns, but it just keeps on coming. In her introspective manner, she shared with me today that if she had known she would lose her sight, she would have invested it more wisely in the things she read and watched: “What if I go completely blind and can’t read the Bible? I have to get more serious about memorizing.” This morning a do

March 2: HOME!!

From his vantage point at our front door, three-year old Seth delightedly shrieked, "Mommy," and I turned in time to see Amy being driven down our long driveway. Our three blond-haired boys buried their faces in their mother. Even the house sighed contentedly. Amy's home. A Happy Husband, David
